The Best Story About Love

Sacrifice of Precious Things For Love

Once I read this impressive story of love which compelled me to weep. It is such an example of love which can hardly be found anywhere else in the world. This story was written by O. Henry. The summary of the story is like this:

Jim Dillingham Young and his wife Della were a young couple who were very much in love with each other but they were unable to afford their one-room apartment because their very bad economic situation. For Christmas, Della wanted to buy Jim a chain for his valuable pocket watch given to him by his grandfather. Della had beautiful long hair which Jim loved very much.

She couldn't buy the gold chain because she had not the required amount of money. To get the money she went to the market and got hair cut off and. Meanwhile, Jim decided to sell the gold watch to buy Della a beautiful set of combs and jewels for her lovely, knee-length, brown hair. When both came home, both were eager to exchange gifts. But when they saw each other's gift both were disappointment because both had sacrificed their most valuable things for the sake of other. Although each was disappointed to find the gift they chose rendered useless, each was pleased with the gift that they received, because it represented their love for one each other which is eternal and indelible.

The Jim Dillingham Young and his wife Della story of ends with the narrator comparing the pair's mutually sacrificial gifts of love with those of the Biblical Magi:

“ The magi, as you know, were wise men – wonderfully wise men – who brought gifts to the newborn Jesus in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. In a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the Magi."

It is the story which if the two lovers themselves read will shed tears because everyone becomes jealous of them.
