Leson No. 4 - End of the Term

END OF TERM

1.            What was Daiches’ attitude towards the week-end as a school boy? Why did he long for it?
Ans.   When David Daiches was a school boy, he always waited for week-end impatiently. Like every school boy he loved holidays for their freedom and for enjoyment. They provided him with a chance to relax and to stay away from heavy school work.

2.            What was his general view of school life?
Ans:   At school, he was not particularly unhappy. He would often enjoy the actual class work. He was a fine student. But he felt that school life was a permanent pressure on him because of the daily hard work and he always longed for holidays to relax.

3.         He liked holiday for their freedom – freedom from what?
Ans:   He liked holidays for their freedom. He wanted freedom from the fear of getting up early in the morning. They provided him with a chance to relax and to stay away from heavy school work. He desired long vacation in summer season to have freedom from the boring burdensome routine at school and have enjoyment and rest.

4.         How did he spend his summer holidays?
Ans:  For David Diaches Summer vacation was only time which he really wished for. These holidays used to be a long time suitable for any practical activity and they gave him permanent felicity. During this time he would visit meadows in July and he moved to some other place along with his family. He enjoyed every single day with conscious relish. 

5.         Wishes don’t come true in this life, writes Daiches. What are the things he longed for but could not have?
Ans:   In his childhood, he wanted a tricycle later a bicycle but could not have. At school, he stood empty pocketed before sweet-shop and ice-cream barrow. He wanted to get ice-cream and sweets free because he had no money to buy them.

6.         What did he do with his pocket-money?
Ans:   David Diaches spent his life in poverty and his parents could afford to buy him the things he wished for. He  and his siblings got a few pennies as pocket money form their parents in their childhood. They could not spend them this money for themselves because this money was given to them to put in the money-box.
