Essay - Threats to Mankind Today

Threats to Mankind Today
(Essay Given in HSSC 2 English Paper 2015)

Never did in the whole past history, mankind was so insecure as we see it now in the present age. In spite of having so much progress made in various fields of life, man lack his peace of mind and physical insecurity. Man used to enjoy his life in free peaceful nature but his greatest enemies were natural disasters. To harness the forces of was his first victory of mankind. With the passage time man made development in science for sake of human services but at the same time he also invented subversive elements. I would like to describe them one by one.

1. Nuclear War
Man has build the world after great hard work and sacrifices but the same other men are destroying it with the excuse of self-security.Nuclear weapons have been invented and they may be used sooner or later. A nuclear war is one, which is fought not with the conventional weapons but with the most modern nuclear weapons. We can read the black pages of history that the world has seen only once the use of nuclear weapons and its extremely dangerous consequences. It was back in August 1945 when America dropped nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki - the two great cities of Japan.

2. Global Warming

Another big threat to mankind is global warming. It is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants. Our beautiful earth is getting warmer and warmer day by day. Such warming is not a matter of a day or two but such changes are expected to grow and speed up as the time passes. Within the next fifty to one hundred years, the earth may be hotter than it has been in the past million years. All the oceans are getting warm and glaciers are melting, land and cities along coasts may be inundated. Excessive heat and drought may cause forests to die and food crops to fail. It is going to bring about climatic changes and is affecting weather, plants, animals, people everywhere.

3. Terrorism
At present time the much worst thing people is terrorism in most of the countries of the world where once only peace existed. We can define terrorism as the use of violence to achieve some goals by the terrorists. It is completely different from war and policy. We can say that it the amalgamation of cold war and hot war at the same time. The evils of terrorism have badly affected not only the underdeveloped countries but also the most developed countries where all kinds of remedial measures and trained soldiers may be at work but even there bomb explosions, discriminate killings, hijacking, kidnapping blackmailing etc. What is the aim of terrorism? It is against whom they regard as their enemies or those who the terrorists consider as their obstacles in the path of their goals. In some countries terrorists are more trained and have the deadlier weapons the law enforcing agencies. Terrorists never considered their evil activities as terrorism but they think it as their heroism. There is a well-known and popular saying about terrorism that ‘A freedom fighters of nation are the terrorists for another one." To put an end to terrorism we need to join hands internationally.

4. Super Volcanoes
Another big threat to man from nature. There are volcanoes, and then there are super-volcanoes. "Approximately every 50,000 years the Earth experiences a super-volcano. More than 1,000 square kilometers of land can be obliterated by pyroclastic ash flows, the surrounding continent is coated in ash and sulphur gases are injected into the atmosphere, making a thin veil of sulphuric acid all around the globe and reflecting back sunlight for years to come. Daytime becomes no brighter than a moonlit night.”

5. Space War - Aliens From The Outer Space
If it is true that life exists somewhere in the outer space and those creatures have the ability to land on our earth, they should be welcomed but if they are the hostile ones, then we feel a great danger at their hands.

Remedial Measures and Conclusion
What should we do to avoid these threats to mankind? What measures should we take? For all these threats we need unity, harmony and fraternity. We, as one mankind, need to fight for our own as well as the coming generations against those who are evil-minded and those natural negative processes. We are awfully required to join hands.
